it feels like i manage to make a batch of preserves at least once a week at the moment.
this week i made jars of strawberry jam from the super cheap strawberries i got from the dulwich hill greengrocer and a bag of jamsetta. so quick, so easy, and so red and tasty.
maybe it’s winter, maybe it’s the new home nesting, and maybe (probably) it’s getting to the end of this phd; i started this phd 4 years ago and quickly started ruminating on this idea of preservation, of excess and keeping for the future, and i made a zine about it and wrote it all up here. the many jars of cumquat marmalade that i made wove their way to newcastle, sydney and adelaide, and had me entering a local agricultural show (and not winning).
the last few weeks i’ve made this jam, a runny mandarin jam (it’s a syrup really), a writers retreat excess tomato sauce, a fruit bowl chutney and i have plans for apple butter tomorrow. here’s hoping the preserves keep me nourished for the winter and i emerge with a big long set of words in hand, ready to be assessed…
